When I was young, Memorial Day weekend was less a holiday than a time of remembrance. A significant number of men in my home church had fought in Vietnam, and I distinctly remember the Sundays as solemn occasions. With that in mind, I've placed a poem at the center of this week's list. It comes from a book called Dien Cai Dau by Yusef Komunyakaa. As a veteran, he visited the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, and the poem, "Facing It," records his experience.
